DHA supplement is also important for elderly
A recent study showed that consumption of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may improve memory in elderly people who have mild cognitive impairment.
Of course this is good news that give hope to the elderly in the United States and in parts of the world that has been widely sought various ways to maintain memory and support cognitive health as a whole.
The study titled Memory Improvement with Docosahexaenoic Acid Study (MIDAS) was conducted to evaluate the effects of DHA in improving the cognitive function of healthy elderly people experience cognitive decline associated with age. The study found that consumption of DHA for six months could improve memory and learning in healthy adults with mild memory complaints.
“The results of this study are very heartening for those who care to maintain their memory. We know that low levels of DHA could reduce cognitive function in healthy elderly people and Alzheimer patients, and high levels of DHA may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Duffy MacKay, ND, vice president of scientific & regulatory affairs at the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN).
“Loss of memory, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are lot of health problems attacked the elderly. More and more we learn the important role of DHA to support brain function, it will be more choice for Americans in managing cognitive decline,” MacKay said in a study published in the Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association.
These findings emphasize the importance of early DHA intervention. While the MIDAS study focused on a population of healthy adults with age-associated memory impairment, another study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), which looked at the role of DHA in those who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, did not show evidence that DHA could provide significant benefits on cognitive function.
“This study reinforces the principle that consumers will get a lot benefit from DHA supplementation, if DHA supplement taken regularly prior to having health problems” said MacKay.
So basically, if DHA supplementation is included as part of a proactive health regimen that includes a balanced diet, regular physical activity and regular visits to the doctor, it will provide many benefits in helping many systems in the body, including memory and cognitive function.
